All Aboard My Underground Train Wreck

This is kind of hard for me but it’s time I came out of the closet. I have a dirty little secret. It’s my…it’s my basement. It’s a disgusting pit! There, I said it! And now I’m setting myself free.

Generally I pride myself on being fairly organized. I mean, of course my house can get out of order as much as anyone else’s sometimes but I’m pretty on top of my game. The laundry gets done weekly, my bills are paid the minute they arrive, my recycling is diligently separated, my fridge is fully stocked and my kids are clean. So what, I ask myself, happened in my basement?

All Aboard My Freedom Train

It’s definitely a disorder: the ways in which we hang onto things of no use to us. Now, I don’t normally think of myself as a hoarder but, as a result of my recent reorganizing exercise, I’m reassessing my evaluation. The stuff I purged from my basement makeover was nothing short of mildly disturbing. But the new sense of freedom it’s given me is therapy unto itself.

The process took over 20 hours, a boxful of industrial strength garbage bags, a number of helping hands and a lot of self-discipline. Okay – it took a fair bit of ruthless overseeing and coaching by professional organizer Jeremy Greer as well. This guy doesn’t waiver when it comes to helping you get your act together.
